HP Stream’s new laptop line-up

New from HP comes a range of new low-cost devices aimed firmly at those not in the market for an iPad or a high-specification Alienware PC. The HP Stream 7 and 8 devices are Intel quad-core-powered 7-inch and 8-inch Windows tablets. The HP Stream 7 tablet starts at $99.99 (€79) and the HP Stream 8 tablet will be out in November for $149.99 (€119) in November with a 4G option.
While these are amazingly cheap, they do come with a one-year Microsoft Office 365 Personal subscription which users, Microsoft and HP hope, will continue to pay for in future. That includes 1TB of OneDrive and 60 minutes of Skype each month, again creating opportunities to upsell to customers. The HP Stream 8 tablet will have an optional 200MB of free 4G data each month with no annual contract for the life of the device too. All of which should help Microsoft and HP claw back some profit over time.

Also in the new family are a pair of HP Stream laptops, expanding this existing budget range. They come with either an 11.6-inch HD display or a 13.3-inch HD (optional touch) display. Powered by fanless Intel Celeron processors with 32GB of eMMC flash memory, they might not be power machines, but will drive Windows and basic apps quite neatly, and look pretty vibrant in magenta or blue.
