First there was “bendgate”, now “gapgate” is a growing issue for Samsung. According to the manual that comes with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, the gap between the display front and the aluminum frame is actually a part of the new phablet’s design. Perhaps the gap is a part of an airflow or cooling feature, or an expansion gap for when components heat up. Samsung doesn’t explain exactly why, but as it is mentioned in the manual, we can assume it will affect all models. At least we know it isn’t a defect, which would be a worse thing.
The story first broke with South Korean buyers noticing the gap, big enough for a business card to slot into. However, the manual says it can get bigger over time, assuming that’s a genuine manual in the photo. Still, there remains a genuine worry that dust, dirt, hairs and even liquid could enter the device. However, Samsung has issued a statement saying that, “”The reported issue does not impact the functionality or quality of the Galaxy Note 4. We assure our customers that all Galaxy Note 4 units meet our strict manufacturing and quality control standards.”
Galaxy Note 4, coming soon
The Note 4 is releasing around the world in October and November, and Samsung needs to get on top of managing this issue. While it managed to have a laugh at Apple with”bendgate”, “gapgate”, it could prove to be a thornier issue if every device is at some risk, no matter how remote, from contamination. Will it affect pre-orders, if people are concerned? Certainly, the idea of a £600 device coming with a wobbly gap, doesn’t sound great. At least there’s an easy alternative in the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 for Android fans.
