What is BitLit?

What is BitLit?

BitLit is an application that centers around turning your actual book collection into an ebook collection. It does this by allowing you to scan in your books and then it goes and finds a free version of that book for you to download. It’s currently free in the Google Play Store with in app purchases.

Okay so here’s how it works. This app wants to help you turn your actual collection of books into a collection of ebooks that you can read on your devices. However, it wants to so in an ethical manner. You scan your bookshelf into the app and the app will tell you where you can get those ebooks for free or, if it can’t find it for free, it’ll try to find it for as cheap as possible. That way you can convert your collection to digital in the cheapest possible manner.

It’s an amazing idea but the app itself still needs a little work. The success rate is getting higher every day but it’s still a little bit low. Thankfully, the interface is easy enough to use so at least there’s that. Even if it can’t find your books for free, it can save you hours of roaming around various ebook stores looking for your titles and that is makes it worth trying out. Most, if not all of the current hiccups could easily be chalked up to release-day issues so we assume they’ll be fixed as time goes.

Report: Nexus 9 hardware revision fixes button issues, potentially other problems

For those of us with the Nexus 9, several problem plague the product: key travel, backlight bleed, and a rather squishy backside. My own unit has the total trio, and the power and volume buttons are so bad that I personally felt the need to vent about it on Google Plus.

When first using the tablet, the offending pieces are extremely rigid and difficult to use, and even after several weeks they only softened up to the point of being slightly bad. As for the large amount of backlight bleeding (my unit has four different areas around the display perimeter) and somewhat concave back side? Those permanent problems will persist.

It seems someone in places that matter have taken notice. Reddit user Sebianoti reports that he received a device from Taiwan manufactured last week, and it has different buttons. Judging by the picture they appear to be either thicker or set further out from the chassis. Submitted for your approval:

Sebianoti also mentions that the new device has noticeably less light bleeding and, in his own words, “no flexing whatsoever” with the back cover. Unfortunately these two points cannot be confirmed as actual changes given that there have been varying reports of the degree /severity of bleed and trampolining from users, thus it’s possible s/he simply received one with less trouble. It is also important to note that Sebianoti has the white color variant.

Seeing as how the Nexus 9 is virtually a brand new product, it is debatable as to how quickly a manufacturing change could be implemented. Still, if things are truly changed, this wouldn’t be the first time a Nexus product has been modified after release: the Nexus 4 saw the addition of little nubs to the back side to prevent sliding on smooth surfaces. With the 9 in particular, however, it’s downright infuriating the original form was ever allowed to enter production, and even more frustrating because early adopters are just flat out of luck.

It’s possible that angry customers plead with the powers that be, a newer Nexus would be provided, but it’s also possible they will be met with a template response indicating that “we constantly aim to improve out products…”. Alas as my Nexus 9 was procured in the USA (and I live in Japan), chances of anything getting resolved is extremely unlikely. If anyone here has one and wants to try, please feel free to post the results below.

Material Design comes to Plume in latest Beta update

Ever since its debut, Plume has done a great job of standing out when compared to many other Twitter clients out there. It’s always been one of the speedier, better-looking clients, and it’s been around for years. If you’re in the Plume Beta community, good news! The Twitter client is getting a taste of Material Design with the newest update.

The overall look of the app isn’t changing all too much. We still have the same general layout and the same pullout menu, but everything just feels different thanks to Material Design tweaks. The colors are more flat throughout the app, and they’ve added the familiar floating compose button to the bottom-right. The pullout menu looks more polished and flat, and has the addition of green unread count numbers.

Since the Material Design update is only in the Beta channel for now, you’re going to have to take a few extra steps to get it. First, join this Google+ community, then head to this page and click “become a tester.” You can then download the app from the Play Store. If the Material Design enhancements aren’t showing up right away, wait a few minutes then go to the Play Store to collect your update.

We can’t say that this visual update was much needed as the app already looked pretty great, but we’d still take Material Design over anything else, any day. Plume continues to provide updates just as quickly as every other app out there, and that’s rare for a veteran Twitter client. Which Twitter client are you using? Is Plume still your go-to?

What is PolyGen Wallpaper Generator?

PolyGen Wallpaper Generator does exactly what the title says it does. It generates wallpapers by using an algorithm that turns everything into polygons. It’s currently free in the Google Play Store with no in app purchases.

The premise is actually pretty cool. What you do is load one of your images into the app and then it becomes “polygonified” (their word). This can create a modern and unique image that is perfect for use as a wallpaper. There are also a variety of other controls such as color, direction of color gradients, and contrast settings. You don’t need your own image if you don’t want it as the app can create its own colorful, polygon background with just a few settings tweaks.

Things that are bright and colorful are in style right now thanks to things like Material Design and a wallpaper generator like this does allow you to create your own modern and colorful wallpapers. You can choose all of the colors so it can also fit virtually any theme. The only downside is that if you don’t like polygonal art, you probably won’t like this at all.
